Legion Gold Making
Legion Gold Making

With just a few more weeks before the launch of Legion, I’m busily preparing my alts for the new Warcraft expansion. In this latest post I’ll explore the Secondary professions of Cooking, Fishing and First Aid to help you on your way to the Broken Shore.

Players often don’t give the Secondary professions of Cooking, First Aid and Fishing a second thought when it comes to making gold in Azeroth and beyond, but they can be powerful tools in your gold making armory. It helps to have these professions maxed out to an experience level of 700 before setting foot on Broken Shore to help you advance in the new expansion.

Demon Hunter – No Skills

If like me you’ve pre-purchased Legion, then you’ve probably been tempted to create a character of the new Demon Hunter class. After a brief – but exciting – opening scenario, your character quickly maxes out at level 100. Unfortunately, he or she has no professions, which means leveling these all from scratch.

As in Warlords, you’ll be able to start leveling your chosen Primary professions at level 1 in Legion; however, the demand for Legion material will be very high in the early days of the expansion and buying mats from the Auction House could be very expensive. So, my advice – if you have time – is to head over to Draenor and build yourself a garrison and start leveling your Primary professions there.

Cooking For Dough

For the Secondary professions, things are a little different, with Cooking being more of a problem. Unlike in Warlords which involved a World drop of the book Draenor Cooking, in Legion you revert to having to find your respective faction Cooking trainer in Dalaran. For Alliance this is Katherine Lee in the Hero’s Welcome and for Horde this is Awilo Lon’gomeba, the Filthy Animal Inn. Unfortunately, you can’t gain Legion Cooking until you reach experience level 700.

Cooking Skulker Chowder
Cooking Skulker Chowder

Fortunately, you can do this relatively quickly in Draenor. After a few quests the book Draenor Cooking should drop which expands your Cooking experience endpoint to 700. Note: you still have to reach this endpoint to pick up Legion Cooking.

The quickest way I’ve found to do this is to cook many of the fish recipes. Fish Flesh is cheap and abundant on

the Auction House and many of the recipes will award you 5 experience point up to around 600. Many other recipes will be discovered as your cooking advances, giving you more options. You’ll also find that many of the high-end cooked material sells on the Auctions House for a nice bonus.

First Aid – Blood Money

Legion First Aid
Legion First Aid

First Aid is a little different. When entering Legion, you’ll pick up a few recipes to create Silkweave bandages at level 1, but like cooking the remaining recipes require you to learn Legion First Aid at experience level 700. Also, the initial cost of Shal’dorei silk required for Legion bandages is likely to be high in the early part of expansion.

Again, the quickest way to level First Aid is in Draenor. Buy up cheap Blackwater Whiptail Flesh on the Auction House and crank out Blackwater Anti-venom to receive 5 experience points an item. You’ll quickly raise your level of First Aid for very little cost.

Fishing Raft
Fishing Raft

Fishing is one of those profession you either love or hate. I don’t mind it. The good news is that you can start fishing in Legion at level one. The generic fish type (not found in specific pools) in Legion is the Silver Mackerel. This fish is used in several early Cooking recipes and First Aid. While you don’t need a high fishing skill level in Legion, it’s handy if you wish to use Toys like the Anglers Fishing Raft for those hard to access fishing pools.

Making World of Warcraft Gold By The Sea Shore

Seashore

When it comes to making wow gold at the lower levels, location can be everything. No matter if you’re Alliance or Horde, where you quest and your journey through the land of Azeroth can present you with some great gold making opportunities. This was the theme that we explored over at the JMT Podcast Epsiode 19 where Nev and I packed our bucket and spade and left the cozy tavern of the Pig and Whistle (Stormwind) and headed down to the seashore for some low level gold making.

Starting Out

It can be hard to make gold when you first start playing World of Warcraft. Not that the techniques of gold making are especially difficult, it’s just that many players in their early levels struggle to understand the basic mechanics of the wow gold economy and are slow to build their initial seed capital, needed to exploit the gold making potential of the Auction House. But there are gold making opportunities throughout the land of Azeroth, even if you’re only a level 10 player. You just have to put your gold-making brain into gear (the best addon in the game) and ask yourself a few basic questions:

  • Do the mobs in this location drop profitable items?
  • Do these mobs spawn rapidly?
  • Can surplus quest items be sold on the Auction House?
  • Are there secondary mobs to grind that drop valuable items?
  • What can I Mine, Gather, Fish and Skin in this location?

A good example are the many quests that lead you to the seashore.

Gold Making By The Seashore

Sooner or later, players in their early levels start to quest by the seashore. This type of location is awash with gold making opportunities – providing you know what to look out for. A good example of this type of location is Westfall, although any similar location in Kalimdor will play the same.

Westfall has a very long shoreline called, unsurprisingly, the Longshore. The shoreline is teaming with mobs found typically in these locations such as Murlocs and Shore Crawlers (Crabs). Now here’s the thing:

Nearly all mobs along the sea shore drop some form of clam and clams can be very profitable.

 Make Gold With Clams

Clam Meat Pearl
Small Barnacled Clam Clam Meat Small Lustrous Pearl
Thick-Shelled Clam Tangy Clam Meat Iridescent Pearl
Big-Mouth Clam Zesty Clam Meat Black Pearl, Golden Pearl
Jaggal Clam Jaggal Clam Meat Jaggal Pearl, Shadow Pearl
Brooding Darkwater Clam Succulent Clam Meat Northsea Pearl, Siren’s Tear
Abyssal Clam Blood Shrimp Darkfathom Pearl (Junk)

Clams are profitable because their Meats are used in a wide variety of Cooking recipes and because they contain valuable pearls. The clams that drop at this level (lvl 10-20) are Small Barnacled Clams which, when opened, contain Clam Meat and Small Lustrous Pearls, both of which are in demand on the Auction House and can be sold for a good profit.

Players questing at this location will probably be grinding the Murlocs which will drop clams; but, the Shore Crawlers spawn at an incredible rate and drop valuable Meats – in addition to clams – such as Crawler Meat and Crawler Claws. The Crawler Meat is used to in Cooking to make, unsurprisingly, Crab Cakes and the Crawler Claws used in the recipe for Cooked Crab Claw.

Tip: Seek out Kendor Kabonka in the Pig and Whistle, Stormwind for this recipe.

Now of course the great advantage of questing by the seashore is the great fishing. Love it or hate it, the secondary profession of Fishing provides you wish some great gold making opportunities. By the Longshore you’ll find many pools of the fish Oily Blackmouth which are in demand from the Alchemists for the reagent Blackmouth Oil. Also, look out for floating wreckage. When fishing in the wreckage there is the chance of bonus catches of loot.

If you’re a Herbalist, then you might try your luck at gathering Stranglekelp which is normally found under the water, not far from the shoreline, but in the case of Westfall it might be slim pickings.

So, Friend. The next time you find yourself questing by the seashore, take time to survey the gold making opportunities that run, crawl and swim along the shoreline.

Dude, Where’s My Noodle Cart!

Noodle Cart

I was hanging out with my co-host @NevAHaddict in the Pig & Whistle this weekend, chatting about the secondary professions on the JMT Podcast when I happen to mention that I couldn’t find the quest for the new Noodle Cart on the Timeless Isle: !Noodle Secrets Long Forgotten.

Being a caring and thoughtful kind of person she just laughed and told me I hadn’t finished all the Pandaren Ways of Cooking at the Halfhill Market. Once I had ‘mastered’ all the Ways of cooking, the quest should appear.

I guess I kinda lost my Way on that one!

Now, for those that have just started cooking in Pandaria, there are six Ways or specializations of cooking, obtainable once a player reaches a profession level of 530. Pick up the quests from Sunshin Ironpaw at the Halfhill Market:

  • Way of the Wok
  • Way of the Steamer
  • Way of the Pot
  • Way of the Oven
  • Way of the Grill
  • Way of the Brew

Now, while I had started down the road on many of these specializations, I hadn’t maxed them out to a level of 600. So I set out for the Halfhill Market and and started to cook up a storm and managed to get my Way of the Oven up to 600 with some juggling of Meats and Vegetables.

A case of ‘Way to Go’!

So, if like me you’ve been searching for the elusive quest for the Noodle Cart on the Timeless Isle and still haven’t found it, make sure you’ve mastered all the Pandaren Ways of cooking and the quest should appear.

As for me it’s back to the farm. I have some Turnips to plant!
