It’s no secret that, when it comes to the professions, I’m an avid Engineer. There’s so many cool items to craft these days and with patch 5.4 well underway I’ve been looking forward to crafting the new Sky Golem Mount.
It’s a Mount Jim
There’s been quite a few additions to Engineering in this patch, not just the Sky Golem. There’s also a little cooking companion called Pierre, a late addition called Rascal-Bot (looks suspiciously like Bad Robot) and a 36 slot bag called the Advanced Refrigeration Unit. All these items require the new daily cool-down of Jard’s Peculiar Energy Source, with an equivalent crafting cost of 10 x Ghost Iron Bars.
Advanced Refrigeration Unit
Now, If you’ve been listening to the Journal of Marcus Ty Podcast with my co-host Nev you’ll know that I had anticipated that the demand for Ghost Iron Bars and Living Steel. Just before the patch I had stashed away a fair amount of both. Sure enough, just after the patch and around the 30 day mark (time for players to craft enough Jards PES) there was a sharp spike in demand for these material and I ended up selling a good portion of my stash, making a great profit to boot.
Before the patch, Living Steel was selling for 350g a bar and after the patch it rose sharply to 750g a bar on my server. There were similar price spikes for Ghost Iron Bars. My assumption is that Engineers on my server were buying up material for their Sky Golem mounts and robotic companions. If I look now on The Undermine Journal, I see at least 6 players listing the Sky Golem for around the same price of 60k. Not a bad profit.
Now, I’m close to crafting the number of Jard’s Peculiar Energy Source needed to craft a Sky Golem (I’m afraid work has interrupted by crafting). So, will I be tempted to flip this mount? I don’t think so.
Let me explain.
Sell The Material Not The Mount
For one thing, this is a cool mount and I have to have it. Secondly, there’s more profit in the long term selling materials needed to craft the mount. Competition is will only increase and there’s no guarantee that my mount would sell – maybe for weeks. Conversely, I’m pretty sure my cheaply sourced Ghost Iron Bars and Living Steel will continue to sell like hot cakes – and not just for the Sky Golem, but for a whole range of crafted gear. Provided I can source cheap mats my strategy will bring in a steady supply of gold.
That’s not to say I won’t craft the odd one or two companion bots. These look to be good compromise to tying gold up in a Sky Golem. Time will tell.
