WOTLK Gold Guide

So, Friend, you have completed the Burning Crusade and done battle with the demons of Outland. You have bought your first flying mount and have experienced flight across the fractured realm of Netherstorm. The ramparts of Hellfire Citadel now seem tame. Its time to move on. So you pack your warmest underwear and board the first boat to the frozen lands of Northrend to seek out the Wrath of the Lich King.

If you thought the Burning Crusade was expensive then you’re in for a surprise when it comes to buying gear in WOTLK. You may be fresh off the boat (or zeppelin), but you can’t believe the prices some of the vendors are charging for basic mats, flasks and potions.

And let’s not forget the fact that your beloved flying mount is of little use here in Northrend until you have paid a trainer a fortune in gold for the privilege of Cold Weather Flying!

So how do you make gold in WOTLK?

There are three basic strategies that I recommend to make gold in WOTLK:

  • Trading
  • Gathering
  • Crafting

To understand the making of gold in WOTLK it helps to know what other players are looking for on the Auction House.  The Auction House is the centre of the World of Warcraft gold economy and it is here that you should hang out to understand what’s in demand in the Wrath expansion and actively trade those items.

Now whether you’re buying or selling basic materials you must know how to price these items. Set the price too high for an item you’re selling and you’ll likely never find a buyer, resulting in your auctions expiring with a loss of your deposit. Set the price too low and you’ll sell at a loss (many players never factor in the cost of the deposit and the auctioneer’s cut of around 5%). I’ve posted elsewhere on this blog on Auction House strategies and have written a complete guide called Auction House Secrets for those who want the complete guacamole.

But what are players looking for in Wrath of the Lich King?

As in The Burning Crusade, players are looking to extend their crafting professions to the next level – from Master to Grand Master. This requires all manner of crafting material for the Primary and Secondary professions. Players are also looking to apply the latest Glyphs and those that Raid need a constant supply of flasks and potions. For a complete list of what’s in demand, simply browse the Auction House under the general category of ‘Trade Goods’.

Gathering in Wrath of the Lich King

Players new to WOTLK should keep it simple; in my guide I go into more detail on some of the more arcane and tricky gold making strategies in the game. But for now it’s best to keep to the basics and supply the new material found in the Wrath of the Lich King  expansion as this is where you’ll be spending most of your time and where items demand the most gold.

I hope by now that you have learnt that it pays to have at least one of the gathering professions: Mining, Herbalism or Skinning. To gather the new material found in Northrend you will need to ensure you have maxed out your particular profession and trained to the next level of Grand Master (350).

Here are a few of popular items that are in demand in WOTLK :

  • Mineral Ores (Cobalt, Saronite and Titanium)
  • Cloth (Frostweave)
  • Herbs (Frost Lotus, Goldclover, Adders’s Tongue)
  • Hides (Borean Leather)
  • Meats (Chilled Meat)
  • Elemental (Eternals)

In Wrath of the Lich King, Players are looking to craft ever more epic and expensive gear. A good example is the Alliance Mekgineer’s Chopper. To make the chopper requires a large number of items including the metal Titansteel. To smelt this metal requires three bars of Titanium, one Eternal Fire, one Eternal Earth and one Eternal Shadow.

Now Eternals are a class of elemental material introduced in Wrath of the Lich King and used very widely to craft all manner of epic gear – like the Choppa above. So, if you know how to gather Eternals then you’ll never be short of gold in WOTLK.

There a number of ways of gather Eternals. The easiest way is to Mine them. The mining of Mineral nodes in WOTLK will also result in a drop of those crystallized elements needed to make Eternals. As an example, the mining of Saronite will also yield drops of Crystallized Earth, Fire and Shadow – all the necessary components needed for TitanSteel,  which is why the profession of Mining is such a money spinner.

But what if you don’t have Mining as a profession?

Well, Crystallized elements needed to make Eternals are also dropped by Elemental beings. You’ll find these all over Northrend. A good example are the Seething Revenants in Storm Peaks. A mob is located at the eastern edge of Dun Niffelem and as of patch 3.3 have a pretty good drop rate and spawn very fast.

So, Friend, if you want to make gold in Wrath of the Lich King then supply what’s in demand. Gather material needed for those crafting in the World of Warcraft, learn how to Auction the material for the best price and make easy WoW gold.
